Choosing Jewelry for Your Piercing
The right jewelry starts with your anatomy, the piercing’s placement, and whether it is new or healed. Use this guide to prepare for a conversation with your piercer.
What Is Included in the Piercing Price?
Our current menu includes basic starter jewelry unless a service says otherwise. It lists standard 316L surgical steel as the included option and premium implant-grade titanium as an optional upgrade.
Ask the piercer which specific piece is appropriate for your piercing and what the final total will be. A material name alone does not establish the quality or suitability of an individual piece.
Steel & Titanium: What to Discuss
| Question | Included starter option | Titanium upgrade |
|---|---|---|
| What does the menu list? | Standard 316L surgical steel. | Premium implant-grade titanium. |
| How is it priced? | Included with listed services unless noted. | Ask for the upgrade cost before choosing. |
| What should I confirm? | The exact material specification, fit, and suitability for my piercing. | The implant-grade documentation, available design, and fit. |
Tell your piercer about any previous reaction to metal before selecting jewelry. The Association of Professional Piercers identifies specific implant standards for suitable steel and titanium; “surgical steel” by itself is not proof of an implant specification.
Fit, Finish & Fastening Matter
Length and diameter must suit your anatomy and leave appropriate room for initial swelling. Ask about smooth surfaces and internally threaded or threadless construction. Initial jewelry is chosen for healing as well as appearance.
For material and construction details, consult the Association of Professional Piercers’ guide to initial jewelry.
When Can I Change My Jewelry?
Have a piercer assess healing before changing jewelry for appearance. Some piercings need a professional downsize during healing; that is different from being ready for any decorative piece. Do not force jewelry through a tight or irritated piercing.
