Tattoo Aftercare: Caring for Your New Ink

Your tattoo deserves care after you leave the studio. Start with your artist’s instructions for the bandage, products, and placement used on your piece.

Your First Days After a Tattoo

Before leaving, ask when to remove your specific dressing and what product to use afterward. Different dressings have different instructions; do not use a generic removal schedule for every bandage.

  1. Wash your hands before touching the tattoo.
  2. When your artist says it is time to remove the dressing, clean gently with warm water and fragrance-free soap.
  3. Pat dry with a clean towel. Avoid scrubbing.
  4. Once the skin has dried, use the aftercare product your artist recommends.

Some fluid and later scabbing can occur during healing. Avoid picking or scratching the area.

Protecting Your Tattoo as It Heals

Ask your artist how your placement affects clothing, exercise, and your work routine. Keep the area clean and avoid rubbing it. If you are unsure about a product or your bandage, call the studio before changing your routine.

Plan around swimming and prolonged soaking while the tattoo is healing. In Yuma’s sun, protect fresh ink with shade and comfortable coverage; wait until the skin has healed before applying sunscreen directly to it.

Long-Term Tattoo Care & Sun Protection

For healed tattooed skin, use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen rated SPF 30 or higher outdoors. Reapply at least every two hours. If your skin feels dry, a water-based lotion can help. Avoid tanning beds.

These long-term care tips are supported by the American Academy of Dermatology’s tattoo-care guidance.

When to Ask for Help

Contact (928) 318-2729 for questions about the bandage or care instructions you received. Increasing redness, swelling, worsening pain, pus, or fever need prompt medical attention. A studio visit does not replace evaluation by a healthcare professional for a suspected infection.

For general cleaning and healing information, see NHS tattoo aftercare guidance. For persistent skin changes or reactions, contact a dermatologist.
